Institute for Medical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnosis

At the Institute for Medical and Chemical Laboratory Diagnosis (IMCL), tests are carried out mainly on blood, though there are also analyses of cerebrospinal fluid, urine and stool samples, as well as of puncture specimens (bone marrow, sinovial fluid, pleural aspirates and ascites). All medical analyses required preoperatively and for blood transfusions are done here, so that the hospital’s blood stocks can also be managed.

As test results are needed as soon as possible, especially in emergencies, and to an increasing extent for routine examinations, the IMCL offers an extensive emergency schedule 24 hours a day, as well as an extended routine schedule from 7:30am to 1pm.

Equipment that is kept at the latest technical standard, and dedicated, excellently qualified biomedical analysists, enable speedy and high-quality analysis. All of  this is achieved with the support of technicians and computer specialists, whereby the final responsibility lies with three clinical biologists.

In 2003 Villach Regional Hospital became the first general hospital in Austria to be certified by the Joint Commission International in accordance with the standards for general hospitals for the quality of services rendered, with the IMCL qualifying in November 2005 as the first and only in Europe to meet the specific standards for clinical laboratories.
