Neurology and Psychosomatic Medicine |
The field of neurology encompasses disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system and musculature. We treat a variety of conditions including stroke, Parkinson’s disease, inflammations such as meningitis or FSME (which is spread by tick bite), primary or secondary brain tumors or spinal cord tumors and multiple sclerosis as well as neuralgic impairments due to diabetes, slipped disks, epilepsy and dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease.
The Department for Neurology and Psychosomatic Medicine treats acute patients as well as patients who need early rehabilitation.
Within the field of psychiatry, patients with all forms of psychiatric disorder are treated, as long as they are not so severe as to require treatment in a locked ward. Depression or bipolar disorders are covered, as well as behavioral disorders, schizo-affective disorders, addiction, anxiety or eating disorders.
Especially in the area of addiction, we work in close collaboration with the de La Tour hospital (Head: Univ.Prof.Dr. Herwig Scholz) in Treffen bei Villach.
The focus of psychosomatic medicine lies in the interaction between emotional, physical and societal processes, which forms the basis for the required therapy. The aim is to offer suitable therapy for those with mostly chronic clinical syndromes and complex psycho-bio-societal problems, and who have already come through organ-specific diagnosis.
To achieve this aim, we have a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, psychologists, physiotherapists, ergotherapists, medical attendants and social workers who, within a neuropsychiatric context, develop a therapeutic concept for psychosomatic disorders. Chronic pain syndrome is one focus, whilst a concept for eating disorders has been applied successfully for years now in this department.
The range of therapies includes disturbance-specific group therapy, single psychotherapy, relaxation techniques, body awareness therapy, music therapy, creative therapy as well as socio-therapeutic support, and of course not forgetting support through medication.
Equipment-based diagnostics are partly available in our department (sonography, EEG, NLG/EMG) as well in collaboration with the other departments in the hospital.
